Blok Sessions

Your child’s squad trains with Blok Sessions.

Blok Sessions is a training app for climbers, and it costs your child nothing. Their coaches write the squad’s plans in it, and your child logs their training. When they join, the app shows them what their coaches will see, and they agree to it. Questions about the squad itself go to its head coach.

Who can join, and what coaches see

  • 16 and over join themselves.
  • 13 to 15 join once a parent says yes in an email from Blok Sessions, and can take that yes back from the same email. You have 14 days to answer. Until then they wait, and the coaches see nothing of their training.
  • Under 13 join as a profile a parent adds to their own free account.

The squad’s coaches see

  • The sessions they log, with boulders, effort and notes
  • Their tests, and how much they trained compared with a normal week for them
  • The check-ins they send before training, finger pain flagged
  • The plans the coaches sent them, their grade and how much strength training they’ve done
  • In a youth squad, their age and a height every 3 months, to see how fast they’re growing

What else to know

  • Only the team’s head coaches and the coaches of that squad see a climber’s training. Other climbers in the squad don’t, and the app has no ads
  • Coaches never see old injuries your child told the app about, their sex, cycle tracking or anything from health apps
  • No messages in youth squads
  • A 13 to 15 year old has their own account, which a parent doesn’t see into. Under 13, the training sits in the parent’s own account
  • Check-ins are deleted when a climber leaves, and after 12 months at most. Heights after 24 months or at 18
  • The check-in flags pain so a coach can talk to your child. The app doesn’t diagnose anything

Blok Sessions (Frank Blokdijk, the Netherlands) is responsible for this data under the GDPR (AVG), and it’s stored in the EU, with Supabase in Ireland. The privacy policy’s coaching section has the rest. Climbers and parents can leave whenever they want, and parents can write to Frank at hello@bloksessions.com, not the club, to have their child’s data deleted.

The email you get

For a child of 13 to 15, this is what lands in your inbox, word for word. Here it’s for a climber called Sam.

Subject Sam wants to join Your Climbing Club on Blok Sessions

Sam asked to join U14 at Your Climbing Club in Blok Sessions, a training app for boulderers, and gave this address as a parent’s. A coach there has already let them in. Nothing is shared until you say yes.

If you say yes, the coaches of that squad and the team’s head coaches see what Sam logs in the app: their sessions from the last 12 months (climbs, grades, effort, how tired they were, how they climbed and their notes), their tests (not bodyweight), exercises they made, the team’s plans and what they logged, their grade and strength-training experience, the check-ins they send before training (sleep, how their body and head feel, how keen they are, and whether something hurts and where), their age, and the heights measured for them. Nothing else on their phone.

Say yes or no here: [a link just for you]

The same link takes a yes back later. If nobody answers within 14 days, the request ends. If you don’t know what this is, ignore this email.
