How to plan your climbing training without paying a monthly subscription

You don't need a subscription to plan training. A plan is a block of 4 to 6 weeks, 2 or 3 sessions a week, each written as warm-up, main work, climbing and mobility, plus a log of what you actually did. A notebook or a spreadsheet handles all of it. In Blok Sessions the session builder, multi-week plans, logbook, tests and trends are free. Pro adds exactly two things, guided timers and the plan generator, for €2.99 a month, €14.99 a year or €24.99 once, which never renews.

In Blok Sessions the session builder, multi-week plans, logbook, tests and trends are free, and Pro is €2.99 a month, €14.99 a year or €24.99 once.

Start with the free six-week strength plan: a file for the app and seven short emails on how to run it.

Or start planning in your browser with a free account.

What a training plan actually needs

Strip it down and a plan is five things:

  1. Blocks: 4 to 6 weeks with one goal each.
  2. Weeks: which days you train, which you rest, and a deload week at the end of each block.
  3. Sessions: the exercises, in order, with their sets and rest.
  4. A log: what you did, how hard it felt, what you climbed.
  5. A test: the same one at the start and end of each block.

None of that is software. Climbers planned this way long before phones, and plenty still do.

Planning it for free on paper or in a spreadsheet

A spreadsheet with one row per session works:

Column Example
Date Tuesday, week 2
Block goal Finger strength
Session Warm-up, max hangs, limit boulders, core
What you did 5 hangs done, 3 boulders tried, 1 sent
How it felt 1 to 5

What it won’t do: time your rests, remind you what the exercise was, or count your sends for you. If you’re fine with a stopwatch and a pencil, that’s a complete system and you can stop reading.

What’s free in Blok Sessions

Everything except two things. With a free account you get:

  • The session builder, with the full exercise library, for warm-up, strength, climbing and mobility.
  • Multi-week plans you lay out by hand, in training periods like Strength or Deload.
  • The logbook, with every session’s exercises, boulders and top grade.
  • Trends: grade pyramid, send rate by wall angle, training load per week.
  • Benchmark tests, like a 20 mm half crimp hang and a max 2-rep pull-up.
  • The browser planner at bloksessions.com/app, with the same account.

There are no ads and no trackers.

What Pro is

Two things, and only two:

  • Guided sessions: a timer for each exercise with the work, rest, rounds and sets built in, countdown beeps, and logging boulders without leaving the timer.
  • The plan generator: you give it your goal, your schedule and your session length, and it lays out a full training block.

Pro is €2.99 a month, €14.99 a year or €24.99 once. The one-time price never renews. There’s no free trial.

Who doesn’t need Pro

  • You time hangs with a watch and don’t mind counting sets.
  • You’d rather lay out your own weeks, which is free. Planning without a coach walks through it.

Who it’s worth it for

  • You do exercises with sets and long rests, like 7/3 repeaters, and you’re tired of losing count.
  • You want a full block to start from instead of a blank calendar.

Questions

Is there a free trial of Pro?

No, there's no free trial and no intro offer. The free features aren't a trial either, so you can plan and log without Pro and decide later whether the timer or the generator is worth it.

What does the €24.99 option get me?

Pro, paid once. It never renews. The other two options are €2.99 a month or €14.99 a year, which works out at €1.25 a month.

Do I need an account?

Yes, a free account is required. It's also what lets you back up your training and use the browser planner.

Can I plan on a computer instead of my phone?

Yes, the browser planner at bloksessions.com/app is free with the same account. Plans you change there show up in the app.

Are there ads in the free version?

No. There are no ads and no trackers, free or Pro.
