How to do it

Using existing holds, build 2-3 boulders of at least 6 moves where two things must happen at the same time - for example a hand and foot moving together, a jump to two holds, or a swing where you catch and place a foot in one motion. Keep the moves similar in difficulty so no single move decides the boulder. Climb and refine each one.

Who it’s for

Anyone who’s technically solid but reads a comp-style boulder and has no idea where to start. Setting the moves yourself teaches you to see them, which is half the problem.

Common mistakes

  • One hard move and five easy ones. If a single move decides the boulder, you get three attempts of useful practice per session. Keep them level.
  • Building only jumps. Two things at once can be a hand and a foot moving together, or a catch with a foot placement in the same motion. Jumps are the obvious version, not the only one.
  • Refusing to change it. A boulder you set that doesn’t flow is a draft. Move a hold and try again.
  • Setting at your limit. You’re learning movement. Six moves you can nearly do beats three you can’t.

How to progress

Set with someone else and climb each other’s problems: you’ll be handed shapes you’d never have chosen. After that, try to recreate coordination moves you’ve seen in comps rather than inventing from scratch.
