How to do it
On easy overhanging boulders with big holds, after each hand move take both feet off the wall and hang for 1-2 seconds, with a slight bend in your elbows and your shoulders engaged. Then place your feet back on slowly and quietly and continue. Climb 5-6 boulders this way, resting 2 minutes between climbs.
Who it’s for
Getting your feet back on after a swing, which is the moment most steep climbs fall apart. Cutting on purpose makes it a skill rather than an accident.
Common mistakes
- Slamming the feet back on. Slow and quiet. Getting them back is the exercise.
- Straight, locked elbows on the hang. Slight bend, shoulders engaged, or you’ll load the joints.
- Choosing holds that are too small. Big holds on easy overhangs.
How to progress
Worse holds, then steeper ground, then replacing the feet onto specific footholds rather than anywhere. Two minutes rest between climbs.
