How to do it

On a board, pick 5-6 problems that form a ladder: start with short, easier ones and finish with longer, harder ones. Give each problem up to 3 attempts with 3 minutes rest between attempts, working up the ladder. Every move should stay powerful - if not, rest longer. For a longer block, add problems rather than extra attempts.

High injury risk. Only do this fully warmed up, rested and injury-free, and stop at the first sign of pain in your fingers or elbows. Training is at your own risk.

Who it’s for

Board sessions where you want power and a bit of endurance in the same hour. Starting short and easy and finishing long and hard gets you warm and keeps every attempt meaningful.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the bottom of the ladder. The short easy problems set the movement quality for the rest.
  • Too many attempts per problem. Up to three, then move up the ladder.
  • Short rests. Three minutes. If the moves stop feeling powerful, rest longer rather than pushing on.
  • Making the jump between rungs too big. Each problem should be slightly harder than the last, not double.

How to progress

Add problems rather than attempts. When the top of the ladder becomes comfortable, rebuild the whole ladder a grade up rather than only changing the last problem.
