How to do it

Stand below a boulder you haven't tried and study it for up to 2 minutes: hold shapes and colors, hand order, foot placements, body positions, and where the hardest move is. Turn away (or close your eyes) and say out loud, in order, every hold and move you remember - feet included, not just hands. Then climb it and note where memory and reality didn't match. Do 3-4 boulders. If feet are what you keep missing, deliberately call them out during inspection next time.

Who it’s for

Anyone who gets on a boulder and immediately forgets their feet. Route reading fails at the details, and the details are almost always footholds.

Common mistakes

  • Reciting the hands only. Feet included, out loud, in order. That’s the drill.
  • Studying for five minutes. Two minutes maximum. You’re training recall under a realistic constraint, not memorising.
  • Reciting in your head. Say it out loud. Gaps you’d gloss over silently become obvious when you have to speak them.
  • Skipping the comparison. After climbing, note where memory and reality parted company. That list is the whole value.

How to progress

Do it on longer boulders, then on problems where the holds are similar and easily confused. If feet are what you keep dropping, call them out deliberately during inspection until it becomes a habit.
