How to do it
Pick one finish hold on the wall. Build (or find) at least three different start-to-finish sequences that all end on that hold, using different combinations of the holds around it. Climb each one, then compare them - which used fewer moves, less effort, or better rest positions. The same finish can often be reached in very different ways, not just one 'correct' beta (sequence of moves).
Who it’s for
Setters, and anyone who thinks a boulder has one correct sequence. Building three ways to the same finish teaches you how much choice is actually on a wall.
Common mistakes
- Three variations of one line. They should use different holds and take different paths, not shuffle the same sequence.
- Making one obviously best. If two are throwaways, you’ve built one problem and two warm-ups.
- Comparing on feel alone. Count the moves, note where you could rest, and see which one you’d trust when tired.
- Ignoring the feet. Two sequences with identical footwork are the same sequence.
How to progress
Move to a finish hold that’s hard to reach, so the options get scarce and the choices matter. Then set the three lines for someone else and see which one they find first, which tells you a lot about how obvious your setting is.

- Base Lots of easy climbing, good movement and aerobic fitness.
- Performance Peak for a trip or a comp: focus, reading problems, trying hard.
