How to do it
Pick a boulder you can already climb cleanly. Find at least two genuinely different ways to do it - a different hand sequence, a different foot path, or a different body position (e.g. a drop knee instead of a flag). Climb each version, then compare: which used less effort, felt more stable, or would still work when pumped. Do this on 3-4 boulders.
Who it’s for
Climbers who find one sequence and defend it. On a project, the beta you found first is rarely the best one, and the habit of looking for a second is worth more than any single move.
Common mistakes
- Calling a foot change a different solution. It has to be genuinely different: another hand sequence, another body position, another way through the crux.
- Judging by which felt easier while fresh. Ask which would still work on the fourth go, pumped. That’s usually a different answer.
- Doing it on a boulder you can’t climb. Start with problems you can already do cleanly, or you’re guessing instead of comparing.
- Stopping at two. The third option is where it gets interesting, because the obvious ones are gone.
How to progress
Move from problems you’ve done to problems you’re working. Then try it with a partner: give each other your sequences and see whose survives the pump.
