How to do it

Start with a simple 2-3 move sequence on existing holds. Climb it, then add exactly one hold or one movement constraint (e.g. no matching, a specific foot only), and climb the full sequence again from the start. Keep adding one thing per round until it gets too hard to complete - that's where you stop or reset.

Who it’s for

Building a problem move by move, which is a good way to spend a session when nothing on the wall inspires you. Adding one thing per round keeps it just past comfortable.

Common mistakes

  • Adding two things. One hold or one rule per round.
  • Not climbing from the start each time. The full sequence, every round. That’s what makes it build.
  • Starting too hard. Two or three easy moves to begin with.

How to progress

Play it with a partner adding the constraints. When you hit the wall, keep the final version as a problem and come back to it fresh.
