How to do it

Write down three things to use between attempts: (1) a short technical cue - a word or phrase for the movement you need most, e.g. 'quiet feet'; (2) a breathing cue - a specific pattern like three slow breaths before starting; (3) a refocus action for after a bad attempt - something physical and quick, like chalking up and looking at one hold before going again. Use all three next session and note which ones actually helped you reset.

Who it’s for

The gap between attempts, which most climbers spend chatting or spiralling. Three prepared cues turn that gap into a reset.

Common mistakes

  • A technical cue that’s a paragraph. One or two words.
  • A refocus action that’s mental. Make it physical and quick, like chalking up and looking at one hold.
  • Writing them and never using them. Use all three next session, then note which worked.

How to progress

Keep the ones that work and drop the rest. A cue that still works after a month is worth more than a new set every week.
