How to do it
Set the Kilter Board to at least 40 degrees. Pick 4 problems you've climbed before, but only use the small footholds nearest each move. If a foot comes off without you meaning it to, start again. Give each problem up to 3 attempts, resting 2 minutes between attempts.
Who it’s for
Footwork on steep ground, where most people stop caring about their feet. Restricting yourself to the small footholds at forty degrees makes that impossible.
Common mistakes
- Using the nearest big foothold. Small footholds only. That’s the exercise.
- Carrying on after a foot pops. Start again.
- Choosing problems you haven’t climbed. Ones you know, so the feet are the only variable.
How to progress
Steeper angles, then harder problems. It transfers straight to real steep climbing, where good footwork is what saves your fingers.
