How to do it
On easy boulders, look at each foothold and keep watching your foot until it's placed exactly where you want it - only then look up for the next hand. It feels slow at first; that's the point. Climb 6-8 boulders this way, 2 times each. It fixes the most common beginner habit of looking up early and placing feet by feel.
Who it’s for
The most common bad habit in climbing: looking up before the foot lands. It’s fifteen minutes and it fixes something that costs you on every single climb.
Common mistakes
- Looking away at the last moment. Watch until the foot is placed. That last half second is the whole drill.
- Choosing boulders that are too hard. Easy problems, so there’s attention to spare.
- Going fast. It should feel slow at first. That’s the habit changing.
- Doing it once. Two laps on six to eight boulders, and repeat over several sessions before it sticks.
How to progress
Take it onto steeper ground where the temptation to rush is greater, then onto problems you’re working. When you catch yourself doing it automatically on a hard attempt, it’s done its job.
