How to do it

On easy terrain, choose 10-20 footholds before you start. Climb or traverse, moving your feet quickly to exactly those footholds and placing each toe silently on the first try. If a foot scrapes or taps twice, go back, slow down, and repeat that bit. Do 5-6 laps with a short rest between.

Who it’s for

Footwork that’s both quick and exact, which is unusual: most people are one or the other. Choosing the footholds in advance is what makes it precision work rather than scrambling.

Common mistakes

  • Tapping twice. One placement, silent, first time. Going back and repeating the section is the rule that makes it stick.
  • Slowing down to be accurate. Both at once is the point, which is why the terrain is easy.
  • Not choosing the footholds first. Pick them before you start.

How to progress

Smaller footholds, then steeper ground. Five or six laps is enough before quality drops.
