How to do it

Put on a metronome app or a song with a steady beat. On easy boulders, make one move (a hand or a foot) on each beat, so your climbing becomes smooth and even. Climb 6-8 boulders, changing the tempo every few climbs: slow, medium, and fast.

Who it’s for

Climbers who move in bursts and then hang around. A steady beat evens out the rhythm, which saves more energy than most technique drills.

Common mistakes

  • Only counting the hands. Feet get a beat too.
  • One tempo for the whole session. Change it every few climbs. Slow and fast teach different things.
  • Boulders that are too hard. Easy ones, so the beat is achievable.

How to progress

Faster tempo, then harder boulders, then try holding a tempo on a problem you’re working. The music version, climbing to a song, works just as well and is easier to set up.
