Where Crimpd is better

  • More climbers use it. Its site says 500k+ downloads, 10M+ workouts logged and 30k+ completed training plans, so it's been tested by a lot more people than we have.
  • The workouts were written by Tom Randall and Ollie Torr, and Crimpd+ builds progressions into them.
  • It's on Android, iPad and the web today.
  • Peer Insights show how your finger strength, pull-ups and flexibility compare with other climbers'.

Where Blok Sessions is better

  • The plan's free. Seven questions about where you fall off, how often you train and whether anything hurts give you four to eight weeks of sessions. In Crimpd, custom plans are Crimpd+.
  • Every exercise shows its minutes, intensity and injury risk, and the ones that need a year or two of climbing first say so.
  • Pro's timer runs a planned session from the first exercise to the last: every hang, rest and round, with a boulder log you can use without leaving it.
  • Pro costs less, €29.99 a year, and there's a one-time option, €79.99, that never renews.
  • Each boulder goes in the log as a flash, a send or an attempt, with its grade and how many goes it took, so your grade pyramid builds itself.

What Blok Sessions doesn't do

No Android app yet (the planner on this site works in any browser), no comparing your tests with other climbers, and far fewer users and ratings. It's new, and one person makes it.

Which to pick

If you want a big library of workouts to pick from on the day, or you're on Android, Crimpd. If you want the weeks ahead planned for you for free, with the injury risk of every exercise in front of you, take the seven questions.

Questions

Is Crimpd free?

Crimpd Free is, and its site says it's free forever. It has over 75 workouts, a training log book and analytics. Crimpd+ adds 200+ workouts and progressions, custom training plans and Skill Templates.

Does either have a free trial?

Blok Sessions Pro yearly starts with 7 days free. Crimpd's website and App Store page don't mention a trial for Crimpd+.

Can I compare my finger strength with other climbers?

In Crimpd, yes. Its Peer Insights compare your finger strength, pull-ups and flexibility with other climbers'. Blok Sessions charts your own tests over time, and doesn't show you anyone else's.

Who wrote the exercises in Blok Sessions?

They come from coaching practice and the sports-science literature, and Frank Blokdijk, the boulderer and coach who makes the app, checked every one. Each has a page of its own on this site, with its sets, rest, minutes and injury risk.
