The best bouldering training apps, and what each one is for
Short answer
There's no single best bouldering training app, because they do different jobs. To plan your own weeks and sessions, use Blok Sessions, which we make and which is free to plan with. For ready-made workouts with timers, Crimpd. For a plan that's written and adjusted for you, the Lattice app, which needs a paid plan. For a hangboard timer that knows your board, Boulder Trainer or Grippy. To log climbs from an Apple Watch, Redpoint. On a MoonBoard, Kilter or Tension board, the board's own app. Most climbers who train end up with two.

First, what do you want the app to do?
Training apps for climbers do four jobs, and none of them does all four well.
- Plan your training: which sessions go in which week, and what's in each session.
- Run a workout: tell you what to do and time the hangs and rests.
- Log your climbing: what you sent, at what grade, how often.
- Run a board: light up problems on a MoonBoard, Kilter or Tension board.

If you want to plan your own training
We built Blok Sessions for this. You pick exercises for the warm-up, strength, climbing and mobility from a catalog of 260, each with its minutes, intensity and an injury-risk rating. Then you put sessions into the weeks of a training period, such as Strength or Deload, and tick them off. The builder, the plans, the logbook, benchmark tests and trends are free.
Pro adds a timer that runs every exercise in a session, a generator that builds a block from your goal and your week, and training load. It's €4.99 a month, €29.99 a year (7 days free first) or €79.99 once.
If you want someone else to write the plan
The Lattice app holds Lattice's training plans, with your sessions in a calendar. It's free to download and you need a training plan subscription to use it. Crimpd+ is the cheaper route to a plan: the paid tier of Crimpd adds training plans to its workout library.
Blok Sessions has no coach in it. Its generator works from fixed rules and you edit the result. If you want a person or a model deciding your sessions, pick one of the two above.
If you want workouts and timers
Crimpd is the obvious place to start. Its workouts were written by Tom Randall and Ollie Torr, the timers are built in, and the free library is big enough to train from.
For hangboard work on its own, Boulder Trainer knows 90 hangboards by name, talks you through the hangs and rests, and runs from an Apple Watch. Grippy does the same job for Beastmaker boards.
If you want to log your climbing
Redpoint tracks a session from an Apple Watch, so you don't type anything between attempts. Blok Sessions logs each boulder by hand, with the grade, whether you flashed or sent it, and how many goes it took. That gives you a grade pyramid and a send rate, but it won't record a climb for you.
If you train on a board
Use the board's own app, because the problems, the grades and the lights are in it. Plan the board session wherever you plan the rest of your week, then climb it in the board's app.
Where Blok Sessions is the wrong pick
- You want an Android app. The planner works in a browser on Android, and the timer there is Pro, but there's no Android app.
- You want an AI coach or video analysis. It has neither.
- You want your watch to log climbs for you.
- You'd rather be handed every session than choose it. Planning without a coach shows what choosing it yourself involves.
Questions
Is there a free bouldering training app?
Yes, several. In Blok Sessions the session builder, multi-week plans, logbook, tests and trends are free. Crimpd has a free library of workouts with timers, and Grippy is free. What you usually pay for is a plan made for you, or a timer that runs the whole session.
Which of these work on Android?
Crimpd and the Lattice app are on Android and iPhone. Blok Sessions is an iPhone app, with a planner at bloksessions.com/app that works in any browser, Android included. Redpoint is built around the iPhone and Apple Watch.
Do I need an app to train for bouldering?
No. A plan is a few weeks with a goal, the sessions in each week and a log of what you did, and a notebook holds all of that. An app saves you the timing, the counting and the adding up.
Why trust a list written by someone who makes one of the apps?
Check it against the apps themselves. The prices and features here come from each app's own App Store page or website on 2 October 2026, and the last section says where Blok Sessions is the wrong pick.
