TrueCoach or Blok Sessions for coaching climbers?
Short answer
TrueCoach is coaching software for personal trainers and strength coaches, and it's good at gym programs: a big exercise video library, multi-week programs and messaging with video. Blok Sessions is built for climbing coaches: climbers log boulders with grade and goes, finger tests and how they feel before training, and finger pain goes to the top of your screen. Blok Sessions is free for 5 climbers, then €10 a month or €99 a year for up to 25. Pick TrueCoach for mostly gym work. We make Blok Sessions.

Coaching climbers? The coach area is free for up to 5 climbers: their plans, what they log and who has a sore finger, in one place.

Where TrueCoach is better
Gym programming. Its builder is fast, the video library covers almost every lift, and messaging takes photos and video, so a client can send a squat for form feedback. Compliance shows on your dashboard. If your climbers' programs are mostly strength sessions in the gym, it's a strong choice.
Where Blok Sessions is better for climbers
A climbing coach needs two things a gym tool doesn't track: what the climber actually climbed, and a sore finger heard about before the next hard session.
- Climbers log each boulder as a flash, a send or an attempt, with the grade, the goes and a note. You see their pyramid and their sessions on their page.
- The check-in before training asks about sleep, body, head, how keen they are and whether anything hurts, and where. Finger pain goes to the top of your screen.
- You ask for tests (finger strength, pull-ups, your own) and each one is ticked off when it's logged.
- Every plan day is a wall day, a skills day or an off-the-wall day, and exercises carry an injury risk, so you can see whether two hard finger days landed back to back.
What Blok Sessions doesn't do
No chat, no exercise video library on the scale of TrueCoach's, the Android app still in review (climbers use the web app until then), and no way to bill your clients. It's new and small.
Which to pick
A strength coach with a few climbers among many gym clients: TrueCoach. A coach whose clients climb: Blok Sessions, free for your first 5 climbers.
Questions
Can I program hangboard sessions in TrueCoach?
You can write them as exercises with sets, reps and notes, and add your own video. What it doesn't have is a hangboard timer for the climber, finger strength tests or a place to log boulders, so wall sessions come back as notes.
Do clients pay for either?
No. TrueCoach says it's free for clients. In Blok Sessions climbers use the free app, and on a paid coach plan they also get the guided timer for your plans and their own Workload.
Which one has more exercise videos?
TrueCoach, by far: it has a library of thousands. Blok Sessions has 260 climbing exercises with their sets, rest, minutes and risk, and you can give your own exercises a short video only your team can watch.
Is there a chat with climbers in Blok Sessions?
No. What comes back is what climbers log and their check-ins before training. If you coach through daily chat and form videos, TrueCoach's messaging does more.
