How to increase finger strength for climbing
Short answer
Hang from a small edge, heavy and short, twice a week at most. After a full warm-up, do 5 hangs of 10 seconds on a 20 mm edge in a half crimp, with enough added weight that you could hold on about 3 seconds longer. Rest 3 minutes between hangs, and add 2 kg after two clean sessions. Never do hard finger days back to back, and climb small holds the rest of the week. In your first year of climbing, skip the hangboard. Climbing heaps of different problems does the job.

| In your first year of climbing | Climbing. Lots of different problems, small holds included |
| Can't hang your bodyweight from a 20 mm edge | Feet-on hangs like Abrahangs, then moderate hangs with weight taken off |
| Can hang it | Max hangs with added weight, or minimum edge hangs |
| No hangboard | Pick-ups from a lifting edge |

Why heavy and short works
Finger strength is how much load your fingers can hold on an edge. A 10-second hang that's hard, stopped well before you'd fail, trains exactly that, and you're fresh for the next one. Long hangs to failure feel like more work, but mostly they train how long you last. Not sure which one you need? Read max hangs or repeaters.
A week of finger training
Two hard finger days, at least 48 hours apart. Max hangs go straight after the warm-up while you're fresh, and limit bouldering comes after them. On the other days, easy hangs if you like them. Abrahangs are built to be done daily.
Then small holds on the wall, in a half crimp and in an open hand. Climbing is still the best finger training there is. The hangs add a load you can measure and raise.
Finger extensor band opens train the muscles that open your hand, the ones climbing barely uses. They take five minutes after climbing.
When finger training goes in, take some hard climbing out, so the total load on your fingers doesn't jump.
Where it goes wrong
- Hanging cold. Warm up with easy climbing and a few lighter hangs first. Max hangs are high risk.
- Adding weight every session. Two clean sessions, then 2 kg. Faster than that is how pulleys get hurt.
- Hanging to failure. Stop a few seconds short. The last second of a failed hang is when your hand position falls apart.
- Training one hand position. Do open hand as well as half crimp. Half crimp vs full crimp has the difference.
If a finger hurts right now, don't train through it. See a physio first.
The exercises
Abrahangs (easy daily hangs)
10 feet-on hangs of 10 s with 50 s rest, across six holds, from 70-80% down to 30-40% effort.
Finger maintenance
After warming up, 5 hangs of 10 s on a 20 mm edge at moderate effort, 2 min rest.
Max hangs (added weight)
5 hangs of 10 s on a 20 mm edge with added weight, 3 min rest. Add 2 kg after two clean sessions.
Pick-ups
5 pick-ups of 8 s per hand on a lifting edge, 3 s to switch hands, 3 min rest. Track the weight.
Questions
Is grip strength the same as finger strength for climbing?
Not quite. A hand gripper or a squeeze ball trains closing your fist around something. On the wall your fingers hold an edge at a set angle, and that's what hangs and pick-ups train.
Can I train my fingers every day?
Easy feet-on hangs, like Abrahangs, are made for every day. Hard hangs need 48 hours between them, and twice a week is the most.
Hangboard or no-hang device?
Both train the same thing. Pick-ups, lifting a weight off the floor from an edge, train one hand at a time and let you add load in tiny steps. A hangboard is easier to fit into a session at the gym.
How long does it take to get stronger fingers?
Tendons and pulleys adapt more slowly than muscle, which is why the load goes up 2 kg at a time. Write it down every session, and test on a 20 mm edge every few weeks so you can see it move.
